The Annalise One Shoulder Maxi Dress is engineered around an asymmetry. A single shoulder strap sets the line of the whole dress off centre, pleating runs down through the bodice to break up the surface, and a high slit opens the skirt as you walk. Three details, each doing a different job, adding up to a silhouette that is far more architectural than a plain column.

Four colours cover the full range of formal occasions, a definitive black, a soft pink, a deep green and a navy blue that reads as an intelligent alternative to black. Sizing runs S through XL across UK 8 to 14. The pleating gives the bodice structure and a little forgiveness through the midsection, and the single shoulder holds the shape securely across a long evening.

Wear the Annalise to a black tie event, a formal ball or an evening wedding, with hair swept to the bare shoulder and jewellery confined to earrings. The slit does the work on the lower half, so the shoe should be simple and the clutch small. One of the strongest formal silhouettes in the Marlowe & Rue range.
