The Chain Earrings with Medallion Drops hang a flat coin-style medallion from a fine chain, which is a combination borrowed directly from antique jewellery. Coin pendants have appeared in jewellery for as long as there have been coins, and the shape has survived because a flat disc catches light differently as it turns.

The chain above the medallion is what makes this work rather than a rigid fitting. It lets the disc swing and rotate independently, so the earring is never showing the same face for long. A fixed medallion on a post is a far more static object and considerably less interesting to look at.
